Apple Announces Major Leadership Shake-Up as Tim Cook Steps Down as CEO and John Ternus Takes Over

Today brought one of the biggest pieces of tech news of the year, and without question, one of the biggest leadership changes in Apple’s modern history. Apple has officially announced that Tim Cook will step down as CEO on September 1, 2026, with John Ternus set to become the company’s next Chief Executive Officer. At the same time, Cook will move into a new role as Executive Chairman of Apple’s board of directors, marking the beginning of a major new chapter for one of the biggest companies in the world.

This is massive news not just for Apple fans, but for the entire tech industry. Tim Cook has been one of the defining business leaders of the modern era, serving as Apple’s CEO since 2011 and guiding the company through years of enormous growth, major product launches, worldwide expansion, and historic financial success. According to Apple, Cook will remain CEO through the summer and work closely with Ternus to help ensure a smooth transition before the handoff becomes official in September.

Apple says this transition follows a long-term succession plan approved unanimously by its board, and the company is clearly presenting John Ternus as the right person to carry Apple forward. Ternus currently serves as Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, and he has been with the company for roughly a quarter century, having joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and later joining the executive team in 2021. Over the years, he has played major roles in Apple’s hardware efforts across products like iPhone, iPad, Mac, AirPods, and Apple Watch.

What makes this feel even bigger is that this is not a departure from Apple altogether. Tim Cook is not leaving the company. Instead, he is moving into a powerful new role as Executive Chairman, where Apple says he will continue assisting with certain aspects of the business, including engagement with policymakers around the world. That means this is both an ending and a continuation: the end of Cook’s run as CEO, but not the end of his influence at Apple.

Apple also announced other important board-level changes tied to this transition. Arthur Levinson, who has served as Apple’s non-executive chairman for the past 15 years, will become the company’s lead independent director on September 1, 2026. Apple also confirmed that John Ternus will join the board of directors effective the same day he becomes CEO.

Looking at the bigger picture, it is easy to understand why this news is hitting so hard. Under Cook’s leadership, Apple says its market capitalization grew from around $350 billion to $4 trillion, annual revenue rose from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, and the company expanded its reach to more than 200 countries and territories. Apple also points to major milestones during Cook’s tenure, including the growth of services, the rise of wearables, the transition to Apple-designed silicon, and major pushes in privacy, accessibility, and environmental goals.

As for John Ternus, this will now be one of the most closely watched leadership transitions in tech. He is stepping into one of the most high-pressure and high-visibility jobs on the planet. Apple is betting that his long engineering background, deep experience inside the company, and product-focused leadership style make him the right person to lead the next era. Whether that next era becomes defined by AI, new hardware categories, further services expansion, or something entirely unexpected, this announcement makes one thing clear: Apple is preparing for the future right now.

For me, this is the kind of tech story you stop and pay attention to. Tim Cook stepping down as CEO is not small news. It is historic news. Apple has been such a dominant force for so long under its leadership that seeing the company prepare to move into a new era with John Ternus at the helm feels like the end of one age and the opening of another. September 1, 2026, is now a date the tech world is going to be watching very closely.
