Two New THE LAST OF US Projects Confirmed as INTERGALACTIC Prepares for Its Full 2027 Reveal
Naughty Dog just gave fans a tantalizing glimpse at what lies ahead — and suddenly, 2027 feels a whole lot more interesting.
To close out The Last of Us Day on September 28, 2026, Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann shared a major update on the future of the studio, confirming that two new projects set within the world of The Last of Us are now in the very early stages of development, while also finally establishing when fans can expect to see much more from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
And personally? I'm incredibly excited about all of it.
The Last of Us Isn't Finished Yet
After years of questions about whether Naughty Dog would ever return to this universe following The Last of Us Part II, we finally have an answer, although perhaps not quite the answer people were expecting.
Druckmann revealed that Naughty Dog currently has two projects in the very early stages that will expand The Last of Us canon beyond the stories of Part I and Part II. Because development remains so early, Naughty Dog isn't revealing exactly what these projects are yet.
That's an important distinction.
Naughty Dog did not announce The Last of Us Part III. We don't currently know whether either project is a direct sequel, a spin-off, something centered around established characters, an entirely new story, or even what medium these projects will ultimately take.
What we do know is arguably just as interesting: there are two of them.
Druckmann explained that the world of The Last of Us remains deeply important to Naughty Dog and that the studio wouldn't return to it unless the team believed it had something meaningful to say.
As somebody who loves this universe, that has me incredibly excited.
I've wondered for years what the future of The Last of Us might eventually look like beyond the first two games. There are countless corners of this universe that could be explored without simply repeating what came before. Knowing that Naughty Dog isn't developing just one new project, but two, opens the door to an enormous number of possibilities.
For now, however, speculation is exactly that: speculation.
The exciting part is simply knowing that The Last of Us continues.
INTERGALACTIC Is Coming Back in a Big Way in 2027
And then there's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Alongside today's The Last of Us news, Naughty Dog provided one of its clearest updates yet on its next major original IP.
The studio says development continues on what Druckmann described as Naughty Dog's “most ambitious game yet.” Naughty Dog will remain quiet about the game throughout the remainder of 2026, but that silence finally has an expiration date.
In 2027, Naughty Dog plans to fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
According to Druckmann, that reveal will finally provide a proper look at protagonist Jordan and her science-fiction adventure.
That is exactly what I've been waiting for.
The newly shared image accompanying this update only adds to my curiosity. Jordan stands within an enormous, haunting alien environment, surrounded by towering organic structures and striking red growths, weapon drawn as light pours through the landscape.
It's gorgeous, strange, and distinctly different from anything Naughty Dog has made before.
And that's precisely why I'm so interested in it.
After Uncharted and The Last of Us became defining pillars of modern Naughty Dog, seeing the studio step into an entirely original science-fiction universe feels like the beginning of another major chapter.
We've had to be patient since Intergalactic was originally unveiled, but we finally know that 2027 is the year Naughty Dog intends to properly pull back the curtain.
No release date has been announced, so the 2027 confirmation should specifically be understood as the year of the full reveal, not necessarily the game's launch.
Naughty Dog's Future Is Getting Much Bigger
Taken together, today's announcements paint a fascinating picture of Naughty Dog's future.
We now know The Last of Us universe has two early-stage projects ahead of it while Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet moves toward a major 2027 unveiling.
That's three projects or initiatives worth watching from one of my favorite corners of PlayStation.
There are still far more questions than answers, especially regarding those mysterious Last of Us projects, but I'm perfectly fine with Naughty Dog taking its time.
If these stories aren't ready to be shown yet, let them cook.
After today's news, however, one thing feels certain:
The Last of Us isn't finished, and Naughty Dog's next era is only beginning.
And I cannot wait to see where it takes us.
