Surprise: Orbiting Our Quiet Distance Is Now Available on Spotify
I have a surprise to share: Orbiting Our Quiet Distance is now available as an audiobook on Spotify.
There has been no long countdown leading up to this one. I wanted the release to arrive as a story you could discover and begin listening to, with its own characters, its own atmosphere, and a complete journey waiting for you.
Published through Carson Kelly Publishing, Orbiting Our Quiet Distance is a standalone science-fiction story about ambition, love, practical care, and the things people leave unsaid while they are busy building a future.
At its heart are Tavren Osk and Elyth Vaure.
Tavren is a mechanic who knows how to make discarded machinery useful again. Elyth is a navigator who wants to see what lies beyond the rust-colored sky of their salvage world. Together, they build Morrowglass: a small handmade ship assembled from what other people have left behind.
It has two seats. The future those seats might carry is harder to put into words.
A mysterious signal from forbidden Sector Nine gives their first flight a destination. What begins as a chance to leave the yard becomes a struggle to survive, bringing Tavren and Elyth closer to truths they have spent years working around. Rescue changes their circumstances again, placing distance between them just as they begin to understand what being together means.
That is the emotional center of this story. There are unfamiliar skies, repaired machines, and places worth reaching, but the people doing the reaching matter just as much. What happens when the opportunity you have wanted arrives at a difficult time? How do you support someone's ambition while making room for your own? And how do you say something honestly after silence has become a habit?
I wanted those questions to have space in this audiobook. A workshop, an empty seat, or a message arriving after a long wait can carry a great deal of feeling. The story follows people who express care through what they fix and what they make possible for each other, even as they learn that some things need to be spoken aloud.
The release includes an introduction, a prologue, all twelve story chapters, an epilogue, and three bonus chapters for listeners. Those extras introduce the people behind the story, guide you through the pronunciation of its names, and point out small details you may enjoy noticing.
I recommend listening to the bonus chapters after the epilogue, since they discuss the story you have just heard.
Orbiting Our Quiet Distance stands on its own. You can come to it without knowing any of my other work. Its central story is complete, while the epilogue leaves room to wonder about what may lie ahead.
This release is also an early step toward growing the audiobook work at Carson Kelly Publishing. I am looking forward to developing more stories for listeners and giving each one the attention it deserves. For now, I am happy to introduce you to this particular ship and the two people who built it.
