Other Mommy Review: More Laughs Than Scares for Me

Other Mommy is not one of my favorite films, and I would not call myself a big fan of it. I still had fun watching it. Several moments made me laugh more than jump, and that is probably the best place to start when explaining my reaction.

It is a strange combination to describe: a horror film that I enjoyed partly because some of its moments struck me as so silly. I can recommend giving it a chance, especially during spooky season, but I would do that with a clear explanation of what worked for me and what did not.

THE SILLINESS BECAME PART OF THE FUN

There were moments when my response felt closer to watching a stupid-funny movie like Scary Movie. I mean that as a description of how I reacted. Certain scenes made me laugh a little instead of giving me the scare I might have expected.

That did not make the whole experience a bad one. I found some enjoyment in the ridiculousness, and once I was watching it that way, I could have a good time with it. Sometimes a movie is enjoyable because you are amused by what you are seeing, even when it is not having the exact effect you thought it would.

I do not want to oversell that as a huge endorsement. I was not sitting there discovering a new favorite horror film. But I also do not want to pretend I hated it when I did have fun. Both parts of that reaction belong in the review.

HORROR HITS EVERYBODY DIFFERENTLY

The thing about horror is that people find different things scary. A moment that makes one viewer jump might make somebody else laugh. That is part of why I can explain my reaction without assuming everybody is going to feel the same way.

Other Mommy did not scare me in the way I might have hoped, but another person could have a much stronger response to those moments. My experience was more about the silliness and the occasional laugh. That is where I found the entertainment in it.

MY VERDICT

Would I recommend Other Mommy? Yes, with those reservations. I think it can be a fun spooky-season watch if you are willing to go along with its sillier moments and see how it lands for you.

It is not a favorite, and I am leaving this review unscored. I enjoyed it as a strange, sometimes stupid-funny movie that made me laugh more than jump. I had fun with it for what it was, and that is an honest enough reason for me to suggest giving it a chance.
